We Need Top Soil - Can You Help?

Mud.jpg

Ok, this isn't a photo of the soil in the Persevere Garden, but it might end up like this, if we have a dry summer. In the meantime, Fay, from the Leith Open Spaces group has posted a great update on the amazing progress that's been made already in the Persevere Community Garden. It's brilliant to hear that the fruit trees that we planted some weeks ago are already in bud.

Feedback that we're receiving from the site suggests that the soil in the garden is really poor quality. This is a problem we could solve if we had a van for transporting top soil. Do you know someone who has a van, or even a lorry, who can help? We'll provide the labour if you can provide the wheels! Please contact us if you have any ideas.

thanks for the mention! Leith Open Space is planning to go to Persevere (what a well named garden!) for more digging this afternoon. I mentioned the poor soil quality to Cllr Gordon Munro and he has promised to see what he can do. It would be great to get a load of top soil and some good quality compost too.

Persevere indeed! I've even put an ad on Gumtree so doing my best to get the word out. The council apparently makes compost from all the garden waste collections somewhere so I'm making inquiries... transport is the hardest bit to sort out really.

I've also arranged for folk from Leith Woodworks to come down to quote for some raised beds on Wednesday evening.

I'm going to try to make it down this afternoon too, as I've still got a whole lot of Hawthorn trees to plant.

Transport may be provided by Community Service people. I know a farmer who has well rotted manure and the CS guy told me they would not bag it but they could collect it for me.
Trouble is my volunteers have no transport to get out there (just past Dalmahoy) to shovel it into bags!
Anyway they might bag and deliver the top soil.

I put an ad in freecycle for transport this afternoon. You never know - some kind person with a van out there might just be looking for the opportunity to bring us some top soil - hopefully free of charge!
Fingers crossed :)

I asked the task force guys in CEC today about transport. We might be lucky I guess...
