Don't let wasted energy run down the drain.

At our Christmas gathering a couple of weeks ago we also had Oliver Musgrave from the Energy Savings Trust give a presentation on domestic water efficiency. Now, you may be spluttering into your mince pie as you read this, "What? Cooncil Juice! But that's free.."

It's true tap water isn't metered and we pay for it out of our council tax, but this talk from Oliver might open your eyes to the true costs of our water use. And even better, if you're an energy saving geek at least, he answers the age old condundrum - is it better to have a shower or a bath? - with a graph! Enjoy.

Below we've got the YouTube videos of Olivers presentation and the slides below that.

I'm sorry I missed this presentation but it is great to have the information in the video and slides. I think metering is probably one of the most important things we can do to save wasting energy – because it shows us how much money we waste at the same time!

My son gave me an electricity smart meter for Christmas last year and it has made me much more aware of the lights we leave on and the machines on standby. For no purpose. Right now my meter shows that we are ticking over at o.2 pence per hour with just the Christmas tree lights on. When I put the kettle on we shoot up to 32 pence per hour. Come night time we quite often go over £1 per hour (and we don't have a plasma telly). Being able to see exactly where the money is going really does help you to make choices.
