Water of Leith freezes over.

According to Three From Leith, this is only the second time that the Water of Leith has frozen over since 1990. Nevertheless, you've got to feel sorry for the ducks.

Of course, this opportunity was too much to resist for the shopping trolley thieves...

There's a better photo by of the Shore here, taken later in the day by Ben Scappaticcio with a proper camera.

Thanks for the mention - yes, the Water along the Shore / Coalhill has been known to freeze in patches each winter but this is only the 2nd time since I moved here in Dec 1990 that the whole thing's frozen over and stayed that way. The last time was either 1994 or 1995 if memory serves me well!

Certainly impressive to see the ice being this persistent.

It's out of the Leith area I know, but the Union Canal has been frozen solid recently over at least the three miles I see regularly. There's only about 30 metres of open water for the ducks near one of the bridges. I didn't know there were so many ducks on the canal! Hard to tell how thick the ice is though. Evidently people have been walking, cycling and even (I think) ski-ing on it. Hopefully they will know when to stop, before it gets unsafe. There are no warning signs on the canal. I expect it's the same in Leith.

Did the whole dock area also freeze in '94/5 too? I have some pics I took on Friday morning on my Flickr site at www.flickr.com/photos/tomgardner/tags/bigfreeze/
