What do you like about cycling?

At the crack of dawn on the 22nd of April, Greener Leith laid on a Commuters Breakfast for walkers and cyclists using the path along the Water of Leith. We chose a spot underneath the Great Junction Street bridge, thinking that it might offer some shelter if it started raining. In the event, we were blessed with sunshine - and lots of lovely breakfast rolls specially cooked by The Water of Leith Bistro.

About 100 cyclists must have passed by, with about 60-70 stopping for a free bacon roll (healthy options were available too). In the hour and half, about 15 cyclists got their bikes maintained for free by Dr Bike.

We also gave away loads of We Love Leith shopping bags, to passers by - although it must be said, there were surprisingly few pedestrians using the path. Here's a short Youtube clip we made, asking people what they liked most about cycling. It gives you a great impression of the cross section of people who cycle these days - and also the main reason why people seem to do it - Freedom!

Spot anyone you know?

Tom Allan, the Guardian Edinburgh blogger, cycled down the Water of Leith to visit the event and he took this slideshow of photos of his journey and the event.

We got some really nice feedback from folk too, on Twitter and on our Facebook page. Leigh-Ann said:

"Cheers to 'we love leith' the breakie set me up for the day and ive done 20 miles on the bike today:)"

There was also a bit of chat, and some more photos posted on the City Cycling Edinburgh Forum here.

That's what we like to hear. Should we run an event like this again? And if so, should we do it somewhere else?

Why cycle to work? Because it is fun! Driving in the city is miserable, stuck in a box, stuck traffic, no thanks.

Please do do more of the commuter breakfasts - but please, earlier! Those of us who start work at 8am can't do 7.30...and were done out of free maps, free bike-doctoring...oh, and the bacon roll...

...Go on, you know it makes sense!

Perhaps the lack of walkers/pedestrians was due to the larger number of cyclists, many of whom have no regard for other users
