What makes a place? Newhaven Habour memorial benches

Tourists who arrive in Scotland, are sometimes surprised by our fondness for memorial benches. These photos of the plaques on the memorial benches in Newhaven Harbour provides an interesting, if often poignant, reminder of the people and organisations who have had a connection with that place.

One of these benches prompted a quick search to find out more about the fascinating history of the Society of Free Fishermen of Newhaven. Some of them are more personal too. There's one that reads:

"Presented by Wullie Merrilees tae his Auld friends at the fit'o the Walk. Settle doon and ca' canny."

You might also be interested to know that The City of Edinburgh Council still runs a 'presentation seat' programme.
