Poll: What should be done to cut litter on the streets of Leith?

The Leith Neighbourhood Partnership staff are in the process of producing the next Neighbourhood Plan which will guide their work for the next three years.

One of the top priorities that's been identified by local people is the problem of litter in the streets.

There was going to be a focus group for local residents and council staff about this issue next week, but everyone is on holiday so it has been postponed.

In the meantime, to help out we put this poll together, to try to gather your ideas. We'll share the results with the council and the people at the focus group whenever it actually happens.

So, it's worth voting, as your suggestions could affect what the local council officers do for the next three years.

You can vote for as many options as you want to - and you can add your own ideas in too.

If you're using a mobile and can't see the poll in your browser, you might be able to vote here.

Seagulls are also a big problem. We have so many of them (my neighbours put bread out for them!). They tear open the bin bags people leave in the street, and can get into the overflowing communal bins with no bother at all because the council doesn't empty them often enough.

We have serious problems on King Street unfortunatlely when groups of young people hang out on a set of steps (most likely because again there are problems with places for young people to go) they make an awful amount of mess: crisp packets, bottles of juice, broken glass, condoms, take away containers, plastic bags, tissues, even hair believe it or not, as someone got their hair cut out there once before... It's disgusting & the neighbours who care have cleaned up after these people on many occasions. Myself being one of them.

I don't think all young people are like this & this isn't a rant about young people today, but as a young person myself I feel incredible angry at the the sheer ignorance of these individuals, and for our environment. Do they really think it's ok to just not clean up after yourself? To create flith wherever they go & expect someone else to deal with it. It's a disgrace & it makes me sad to live in a place where this is common practice.

To add to that the council who I believe are meant to come up & down our street to clean it, do nothing.

A neighbour stopped to speak to our new street cleaner a week ago & he simply said "So is this new you coming up here" the street cleaner said " No I'm new, but I don't know where I'm meant to stop, so I'll just not go too far"- so he stops at the a gate at the Great Junction Street end of King Street & leaves the rest of the street to fester in its filth.

As a result I myself am turning into a bit of a womble, but I'd rather everybody just took care of Leith, and the people who think it's ok to drop litter should be educated through the best way possible.

Rant over.

Re: the gull comment.

If the rubbish was not accessible to the gulls, their numbers would drastically drop within the City. It's a viscous circle that is quite easy to break by implementing all of the above suggestions. The gulls are not to blame, we are!
