Spend days out in the sun with the Friends of Dalmeny Street Park this start of summer. The Friends are a community group initiated by Out Of The Blue using the arts as a catalyst for action. Following our ‘No messing’ campaign and litter pick the 25th of May, the 'Parklife' Leith Festival weekend of the 31st May/1st June offers a wide range of locally-led activities celebrating the spirit of Leith: community gardening, basketball tournament for over-16s, 5-a-side football for under-18s and more.

If sport is not your thing, come to our tea and scones marquee and enjoy outdoor poetry performances by local artists. Dog owners also have a special treat: the Sunday 1st of June will also host our first Dog Show in collaboration with Braid Vets and the Lorne Primary School ECO Committee. In brief, come out and play!Bouncing a ball.

Mixed touch rugby is the game for you! Not convinced? Come and have a  runaround on Leith Links with an egg shaped ball amd we will win you over!  Already know how to play? Great!

Friends of Dalmeny Street Park and Halcrow Hustlers are planning to head down to Leith Links this coming Tuesday 6th May from 6.30pm to celebrate our greenspace, make new friends and stretch our legs.If we get enough people we will have a couple of games of 6 aside mixed touch rugby.

Great fun, not too serious and it doesn't matter how fit you are; you can play for 5minutes or 50minutes; its up to you!

Come join us, rain or shine! Our only aim in life is to celebrate green spaces in Leith by encouraging as many activities as possible! If we get enough interest we might even challenge The Meadows to a touch rugby tournament later this month; lets prove that Leith rules!

The next meeting of The Friends of Dalmeny Street Park will be held in Out of the Blue's Drill Hall at 7pm on Thursday 6 December (36 Dalmeny Street, Leith).

We'll be celebrating our many achievements this year and anyone interested in this community's activies is welcome.  A wee exhibition of these achivements will include:

  • Some of the work that local young people have been doing with Streetwork on their views and desires for the park
  • Lorne Primary School's work on ideas for the playpark and their ECO Committee's plans for improving the greenspace
  • A short film from the Beanland Film Company of the very successful Streetball Tournaments we've held this year
  • An announcement of the FDSP Planters Project, a community project funded by Scottish Natural Heritage that will provide a community growing space to encourage biodiversity and continue to improve the park's natural environment

Parklife Streetball Tournament

| CommentsBe The First To Comment On This Post |

Saturday, 25 August - Dalmeny Street Park

So who says basketball isn’t popular in Scotland?

After the success of the first tournament in June, The Friends of Dalmeny Street Park, in association with Out of the Blue, brings you another Parklife basketball tournament for over 16s.

If you’d like to play, meet people and fundraise for this fantastic local park, contact Elric on elric_vh@yahoo.co.uk.  (£1 suggested donation per player and a basketball, generously provided by our Community Council, goes to the winning team.)

Not only that, a 5-a-side footie game is being organised by the Leith Youth Action Team for under 16s so, if football's your game, please come along.

Finally, being the Greener Leith site, FDSP is of course committed to improving the greenspace of the park.  We're hoping for some spare plants from the Council and, if we get those in time, anyone interested in a bit of gardening to help improve our new beds is very welcome.

If you'd like to know more about The Friends of Dalmeny Street Park and how you can get involved in the increasing activities that the park is playing host to, please contact Rob on 0131 555 7101 or Lise on mail@lisebratton.com.
